For as long as I can remember every friend I have, no matter if they are really into horror movies or not all were crazy about Freddy Krueger and the A Nightmare on Elm Street series as a whole. And it’s like that with everyone pretty much as Freddy went from the big screen to a pop culture icon in the 80′s and that continues on now.
But what I find the funniest about Freddy is he got soo popular that everyone (mostly even the most uptight parents) forgot one big thing about the man….he was a pedophile!
A Nightmare on Elm Street (or the first couple anyway) were straight up horror films and they lacked all the humor and one liners that all the rest to follow would have. Now every single film in the series is rated R and as a result kids shouldn’t (according to the MPAA) even be able to see the films yet their parents can. So how is it that Freddy got soo well known to a point that kids dress as the man for Halloween as parents seem to not even notice that their kids are dressing as a child molester??
Now don’t take this the wrong way folks, I’m not trying to preach about it, because I find it hilarious really. I’ve always loved A Nightmare On Elm Street but it just always intrigued me that a story about a pedophile that comes back to kill kids in their dreams in very over the top violent ways could go on to be as mainstream as it did.
Dolls, video games, board games, make up kits, light switch covers, water squirters, yo-yos, posters, you name it and Freddy has it. As far as I’m aware folks like Jason, Michael Myers, and Leatherface doesn’t even have ALL of that merchandise out there. Did you guys know that no counting the song Will Smith and DJ Jazzy J Jeff had about Freddy he also had his OWN album?? It was without question Freddy Mania at one point folks.
So my question to any of you out there reading this is this, how did Freddy get soo entertaining, soo popular that he shook the pedophile label to get as popular as he did? And I am well aware that it never really says flat out that Freddy is a child molester but it is very heavily hinted at and assumed by most.
