This is why I leave legends of monsters a lone and don’t bother trying to find them!

Goatsucker (2009)
Directed By: Steve Hudgins (Maniac on the Loose)

The Prologue
Once again I’m looking at a film made by Big Biting Pig Productions, and this time it’s a more recent film of theirs and it deals with the legend of the Chupacabra, or El Chupacabra if you will..either way it means Goatsucker! And oddly enough just a few months back in my home state of Tennessee someone thought they had actually shot the El Chupacabra but as it turns out, it was just a Fox with the mange…darn it!

Regardless after the way Steve Hudgins’ Maniac on the Loose blew me away I was going into this one with higher expectations..and I wasn’t really disappointed. Taking a plot that seems straight out of an 80′s horror films Steve manages once again to make a film that I’d recommend over much of what you see out there today.

The Movie
Capitalizing on a rash of sightings of the legendary creature called El Chupacabra, Spanish for The GoatSucker, a touristy hiking company creates a GoatSucker hiking tour. The pleasant hike turns into a nightmare when disturbing events cause the group to suspect that The GoatSucker may be more than just a legend…Gather around the campfire kids because it’s a lot more than just that plot summary going on in this movie. I always avoid spoilers in reviews but take my word on it…it’s far more interesting than just that.

Take everything you’ve come to know about horror..what the final girl format is supposed to be, who’s the type that’s supposed to go first, how certain people are supposed to act and just toss it out the window because Goatsucker turns the old format on it’s ear. Things happen that normally shouldn’t and it adds to the effect of the film on the viewer.

One moment for sure left me with my eye’s wide open because me being me, I thought I had it all figured out..boy wasn’t I wrong!

Keeping with a style I’m starting to notice with his movies Steve Hudgins has a way of telling a story that at the very start may seem pretty cookie cutter but don’t let the looks fool you, things seem to always be going on beneath the surface that comes out to shock you as the movie moves along. Also once again I must admit the acting impressed me greatly. You just don’t see this level of acting on this style of production..Kudos to you all!

If I just had to nit pick about this I would say things do seem a bit slow moving at first but it’s well worth the pay off once everything gets where it’s going. Perhaps had it been up to me I would have changed just a few things around, but perhaps had those things been changed it wouldn’t have left me with the lasting feeling I have from watching it..a sorta feeling I’m more than just sure these guys were going for.

The Conclusion
Good fun here gang! I think I might have found my new favorite company for independent horror! You can do a lot worse than kicking back to watch this movie. And just see if you can guess how things are going to turn out before the cards all fall into place.

For sure a movie I feel you all should check out. And if you do then drop me and line and let me know how you felt about it.
