As far back as one cares to recall one thing has been common the world of movies..well, mostly horror movies, if the films makes any movie at all or gets anyone talking at all then you just GOTTA make a sequel!
But I ask the question, do we always need a sequel? Nine times out of every ten the original is far superior to many films that turn into franchises, but there is money to be made. Friday the 13th has spawned a grand total of twelve films (one being reboot if you want to count it), Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and SAW have all had a number of sequels and reboots with everything mentioned besides SAW there.
But what about the horror films that didn’t get a sequel at all? Are they better as stand alone films or do you look at them like they just wasn’t good enough for the sequel treatment?
The Burning, The Prowler, Torso, and even the more modern day Wolf Creek have yet to get a sequel. While I’m willing to bet we’ll someday see a sequel for Wolf Creek, I ask what about the older films there that came out during the days of the mass sequels?
Pieces, The Driller Killer, I Drink Your Blood, and the list can go on rather long of films that were good and didn’t get a part 2 to follow (Well, I don’t know if I’d call Driller Killer good but anyway). Do you feel they work best that way or does it somewhat make them seem less?
While you can look over the Freddys and the Jasons of the world because they each became pop icons in the world what about great films that did get sequels like Silent Night, Deadly Night and I Spit On Your Grave? Do you think both could have been better left alone as stand alone films rather than the four other films we got with Silent Night, Deadly Night and the somewhat unknown sequel to I Spit On Your Grave titled Savage Vengeance?
I’m always torn on the subject myself. I do get sick of sequels from time to time but I can deal with the majority of them just as long as nobody goes into space or the hood. But what I don’t get is how stuff like Withcraft can get THIRTEEN films deep yet something as good as Night of the Creeps never got a part 2.
How do you folks feel about it? Do you love sequels or would you rather they stop at the first?
