Now as you walk around most stores these days (of the none actual costume store type) you’ll notice they have some pretty cool things for kids to go as for Halloween this year! Most are full body costumes made of some form of material (I’m not a woman don’t ask me what it is) and if they require a mask, it’s a mask that fits around their whole head! Back in the day we weren’t that lucky. See when I was a kid, many of the costumes kids were wearing looked a lot like this…
Yes, that was pretty much the 80′s and early 90′s there, and while I’m sure this style of a kid’s costume can still be found, it’s not as common as it once was. I recall when I was in kindergarten (back in 1988) about 90% of my class had a costume on that was made just like the one above here. I found it kinda funny to considering there were around 10 G.I. Joes running around. For anyone wondering, I was Frankenstein’s Monster.
After searching to the ends of the earth (or Google) I found out that these costumes have masks that are called “PVC” masks. And pretty much what you got was a mask with a thin (easy to rip) face with no back, two eye holes and some breathing holes cut out, and it had a strap to attach it to your head. And as you can tell, the mostly polyester body of the costume wasn’t much better, but these were kinda IN back in the days of “Hammer pants” and slap bracelets.
What I think made them kinda cool was you could find one of these of ANYTHING. Monsters, cartoon characters, TV show people, anything! If it was popular at all you could find a costume like this of it. And for the most part they didn’t cost a whole lot of money, which is why I think they were so popular for kids before we all grew up and realized they didn’t make them in our size anymore.
So I’m sure if you’re reading this you wore one of these for at least one Halloween. Feel free to share just which one you had.
