Some Love For Tales from the Darkside

Man lives in the sunlit world of what he believes to be reality.
But… there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real,
but not as brightly lit… a DARKSIDE.

While I have love for the classics, even if I don’t always sound like I do, and while I’ll always have a soft spot for The Twilight Zone when it comes to horror anthology shows, for me where it’s at was always with Tales from the Darkside.

Tales from the Darkside was an anthology horror TV series produced by the man himself George A. Romero, back when he was still the man. It originally aired back in the day in syndication from 1983 to 1988. Similar to Amazing Stories, The Twilight Zone (of course), Night Gallery, The Outer Limits, and Tales From The Crypt, each episode was an individual short story that ended with a plot twist, and more times than not it was a really good twist. The series’ episodes spanned the genres of horror, science fiction and fantasy, and some episodes featured elements of black comedy or more lighthearted themes.

After the show ended it even spawned a movie called, Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (Duh!) and that little film reunited Creep Show buddies Romero and horror author Stephen King. Which is pretty cool considering it was the horror anthology film, Creep Show, and it’s success that gave us Tales from the Darkside to begin with.

While it’s no easy task picking favorites when it comes to episodes, I’ll just off hand name a few that come to mind. I Can’t Help Saying Goodbye, a story of a family that keeps noticing people are dieing after their little girl keeps telling people “Goodbye”, My Ghostwriter – The Vampire, a tale of a writer who lets a vampire live with him in exchange for his stories to make novels about,  and Sorry, Right Number, where a woman receives a bizarre and frightening phone call and figures out its meaning too late. That one btw was written by Stephen King! These are just a few, but believe me there are way more great episodes that you can still see by buying the DVD box-sets or by setting up really late and catching them on the SyFy Channel!

The dark side is always there, waiting for us to enter, waiting to enter us.
Until next time, try to enjoy the daylight.
