It’s best to hold your breath!
Respire (2009)
Directed By: David A. Cross (GhostWatcher)
The Prologue
Today we take a look at a film that takes us back to the fine folks over at MTI with Respire. A movie that packs a pretty creative plot and can be fun at times to watch. Usually that right there is really all you need to get a pass around here, because with most films you get these days both of those factors seems to be lost. So creativity isn’t dead, folks! So how about you sit-back, relax, and check out this review of a pretty good little indie film that might just shock you at time or two before it ends.
The Movie
Some believe that when someone dies in their last breath the soul leaves the body. As a result some also believed that the soul contained powers that could cure sickness. Test were ran and things went wrong, but now those test are popping back up and poor Susan who has cancer gets caught up in the middle of it all and is dealing with some nasty side effects of it, as well as being trapped between two parities trying to get the breath samples for themselves. Who can she trust? Can she control the side effects? Well there is only one way for you find out, and I’ll admit it’s actually worth checking out to see.
I admit at first I didn’t expect much from this film. I’m also happy to admit that I was wrong in no expecting much. For an indie film this movie is pretty clever at times, stylish, and well put together and outside some spotty acting or dialogue from here and there in it, it’s well worth a watch. And what justifies that watch more than anything is the performance of Mathew J. Wright in the role of Raif. The guy can go from one side of the scale to the other and is very much fun and entertaining to watch.
Also while some of you may find the plot a little on the silly side, I found it pretty clever for what it was. I also think the story mixes elements from several types of sub-genres at times. A little slasher, a little zombie, a little ghost, ect. and it all mixes together well, oddly enough. I was actually interested in what was going on and I was pleased because you never know what you’ll get with these indie film. Sometimes you get a snooze feast, but this one actually keeps you on your toes mixing everything I spoke of together, along with some really cool plot twists at times.
If I’m forced to nitpick about this one I’ll have to say I thought it had a kinda weak ending. Maybe not as much weak, just it doesn’t seem to make much sense after watching what we watch during the movie. I know the movies has more than a few twists but if that’s a foreshadowing to a sequel or twist I don’t think it adds up that well when you look a the big picture. It’s a very out of left field and awkward way to end an otherwise pretty cool film. Not saying it kills the whole film, but it does somewhat bring things down a notch. still, I’d say it’s worth watching.
The Conclusion
Well if you want to give this a watch you can check it out from MTI and I say it’s very much worth checking out. If you have nothing else to watch I think you could find yourself enjoying this more than you might think, that’s of course what happened with me while watching. It found a way to keep me interested and suck me into the story and you can’t go wrong with that.
