Probably the best one they’ve made in years!
SAW 3D (2010)
Directed By: Kevin Greutert (Saw VI)
The Prologue
Everything must at some point come to and end, even a horror franchise right? Well whether or not SAW 3D aka SAW: The Final Chapter is indeed the end to the modern day legendary horror franchise remains to be seen, but for now we have what is billed as the end regardless. And after seeing a few sequels in a row now from SAW that made me kinda feel “Meh” about the whole series, I’ll admit this one was a bit of a breath of fresh air. Suffering from the old Friday the 13th syndrome, but actually suffering worse due to the fact there had been a saw film every single year since 2004 without a break at all, SAW needed something cool to finally seem fresh again, and I’m happy to report I think it more or less found that this time around.
The Movie
The battle between Hoffman and Jill over Jigsaw’s legacy keeps rolling on, now with Hoffman on the run following the events of our last film. Also added to the mix while this is going on is a group of Jigsaw survivors who are coming together for some support, they just so happen to be drinking the kool aid of fellow survivor Bobby Dagen, a man whose not exactly what he seems to be. Also this film features the long awaited return of Dr.Gordon, as every loose-end from the franchise seems to get tied up in one nice and bloody package.
If you are supposed to be wrapping up something that has ran for seven years in a row and it’s a horror franchise, odds are you have a lot of holes and loose-ends that will need closed up if you want to end it and end it in a satisfying manner. I’m happy to report that as far as the series as whole goes with plot holes and such, I can’t find a thing to actually bitch about now that I’ve seen the apparent end to it all with SAW 3D. I also think if they never make another one again (and really whats the odd of that?) this is a near perfect if not perfect way to have it all come to a bloody end.
Since he chopped off his foot in the original film, we’ve all been waiting for SAW to bring back Dr.Gordon. And he finally shows back up here, and I feel as if I can say that because it’s not much of a spoiler since the film company spoiled that whole thing themselves with the promotion for the movie. I’d dare say the film has a more genuine feel with the doctor being back on screen. It’s actually soo good to have him back it nearly makes me forget all about the character of Det. Matt Gibson who we also have in a big role here played by Chad Donella , and his somewhat kind awful at times performance…Almost.
If you are looking for gore, this film has that in buckets once again. We also get some of the better traps I think I’ve seen in a long time from a SAW film. I also get to have Christmas come early due to the fact the lead singer of Linkin Park, Chester whateverisnameis, gets put in one of these traps. Now if only we could get Russell Brand in one of those if there is anymore sequels as well. Regardless, I really liked the gore and I really like the traps. I also think this film actually builds tension waaay better than the films have in the past. You have some tense moments, and you just know doom is in the air, and it makes for a fun watch.
You got Hoffman, you got Jill, you got Jugsaw, and you even have Dr.Gordon, so it’s a pretty rewarding “finish” to the franchise. My one small complaint is that Amanda is nowhere to be seen in flashback form, so it’s a little weird since she was a big part of the series and you’d kind of liked to have seen her at least once for the last film. Other than that the only thing I can really think to complain about is that you kinda see the big twist coming a mile away and I still don’t get why Hoffman has to be such a bad ass, but none the less it’s a lot of fun and gives you a perfectly, even if a little predictable, wrap up to the franchise. This all together makes up a film that MAY be the best since the original.
The Conclusion
Well I had a lot of fun watching it. This also should be noted as the movie that made me upgrade to blu-ray. After seeing that there wasn’t an unrated version on DVD in a stand alone set, I broke down and got myself a blu-ray player and the blu-ray combo pack of this. And there’s even a 3D version of this on blu-ray, so there’s several ways to watch. This is horror and I’m not stupid, so I don’t believe we’ve seen the last of SAW. I however do think that if there is never another SAW after this that it would be just fine because this wraps things up pretty air tight and to my liking.
