It’s rather interesting and informative!
Cropsey (2009)
Directed By:Barbara Brancaccio and Joshua Zeman
The Prologue
More stuff from Breaking Glass Pictures today! And today it comes to us in the form of Cropsey, a documentary that covers the old legend and how it relates to a series cases of kids that came up missing in Staten Island way waaay back in the day. I’ve heard this film has made it’s rounds at festivals and I believe it was pretty much well received by most who have seen it. Unlike other horror-ish documentary films, this one is 100% legit as far as I know and I can tell. I think that’s a good thing since the movie doesn’t try to blow smoke up anyone’s butt.
The Movie
After some kids come up missing and some even dead, two filmmakers connect the dots to that of the legend of Cropsey. While the legend it’s self is just that, the man who was arrested and convicted for many of these actions was very real. Not only was he very real but he came off just as monstrous as the legend. But did he really do it? Or is there a much bigger picture to everything that people are turning a blind eye to? In this film, which is a documentary, we take a trip to Staten Island to see just what new info can be found out about the whole darn thing.
The documentary called, Cropsey, is a very interesting tale. The thing about it is however it’s a film that belongs on a channel like A & E, and not everyone will find the same amount of enjoyment from it than some others will. I myself like a good documentary and I felt this one stayed just interesting enough to hold my attention. Also it’s only around an hour and twenty minutes, so it doesn’t hang around too long either. That’s always a good thing, especially with a low budget experiment like this that doesn’t have any real flash to it.
Andre Rand, the man in question here, does come across as a very creepy individual. While it wouldn’t take long for someone to figure out that he is a few fries short of a Happy Meal, saying for certain he did do what he’s being accused of might be a different story. Some things don’t fully add up, other things add up a little too well. Meaning there is enough holes in the case to warrant questions and a full on documentary covering what we cover here. The film more or less shows you all the stories and all the info and then leaves it up to you to come to a conclusion on. That’s pretty clever and well done in it’s own right.
It was also pretty smart for the directors to use the legend of Cropsey to sell the movie. Now I always heard that Cropsey stalked kids at camp (The Burning, anyone??), but this was an interesting take and twist on the old legend. Toss in a few plot twist mixed with a satanic cult angels and you have a pretty good little flick that should be enjoyable to some, but sadly won’t be enjoyable to everyone. I myself enjoyed it but if you don’t like watching old fashion documentary films it might tickle your fancy. Still, I think it’s good enough for you to take a chance on.
The Conclusion
The nice people at Breaking Glass Pictures were nice enough to send me this and if you want to check out the legend for yourself that’s the place to go. It won’t be for everyone but it hits the streets on May 10th and I think it could be well worth your time if you like this sorta stuff. Very informative and full of some rather interesting information.
