Let’s fight those demon monster again, shall we?
Puppet Master 5: The Final Chapter (1994)
Directed By: Jeff Burr
The Prologue
And let’s not get all settled down after seeing Puppet Master 4 just yet (Considering you’ve watched 4 before this). So now we slide on into, Puppet Master 5: The Final Chapter. The other half of part 4 that was originally intended to go along with this as one long movie. And also the intended last film in the very popular Full Moon Entertainment franchise, Puppet Master. Part 4 was way more entertaining than it had any right to be, can they now keep it up with part 5??..The suspense is killing me.
The Movie
The puppets battle their most powerful enemy yet as they protect the new puppet master from the demon God that created the Secret of Life. Ah ha! So see there? That’s why it ended abruptly in part 4! That and because this and part 4 were intended to be one long movie..Which I’ve probably already mentioned. But that’s OK if I repeat myself since Full Moon repeats themselves a time or two in their own films. But for what it’s worth, at least they are continuing a story that was kinda cool this time around, right?
So we are picking right back up almost directly after our last film and don’t worry, if you missed that one we have around a ten minute recap to kick things off! But regardless Myers is in jail and apparently they have blamed all those deaths from part 4 on him and his Puppets. His girlfriend is trying to bail him out, their medium friend is in a coma, and his boss is trying to steal his puppets! Oh and did I mention the demons are back and Clu Gulager has a very small role? What’s not to get excited about!!..Well, it does kinda drag a bit which brings it down. Had it been cut down and added in with 4 I think it would have been a lot better. As a stand alone film, 5 just seems to have trouble getting things rolling.
For you big fans of these Puppets, you may be happy to know that Torch is back! No word on where he was last time, so we’ll just say they had forgotten to take him out of the trunk or something. Still no idea where Leech Woman is, but I guess it’s a little harder to remember each of your puppets when you make as many rushed movies as Full Moon seems to make. Still, we get our demons who prove to be a little more worthy of a foe this time around for the Puppets. The humans just can’t seem to stand up to the darn things, but the Puppets are seemingly still in kick-ass mode even with THE main demon being here this time around. So, I guess one could say things get a little anti-dramatic at times.
There’s also a little too much cat and mouse in this movie. Myers’ boss is leading a group of dummies into the old Puppet place to steal them and a lot of movie is them walking around trying to find them. I think overall there’s nothing really terrible about this movie, but it needed a better pace and more of the cool effects like we got in part 4. When the smoke clears here it’s pretty satisfying or at least I found myself content with the outcome. This was intended to be the last Puppet Master film and thinking back now, perhaps it should have been.
The Conclusion
Echo Bridge is your place to be for THIS and other Full Moon titles. Also, you can pick up 4-6 together as well as 1- 3 in cool sets. These movies are best viewed back to back in my personal opinion as 5 here just doesn’t hold up too well on it’s own merit. But when seen back to back with part 4, it makes things a little better.
