It was at least a nice try…
Bite Marks (2011)
Directed By: Mark Bessenger
The Prologue
Well, it’s another day and another vampire movie. This one coming from the fine folks over at QC Cinema by way of Breaking Glass Pictures. The movie I am talking about goes by the name of Bite Marks! And unlike most vampires movies coming out, this one doesn’t have anyone sparking, it isn’t a remake, and it seems to have some effort put into it. Which is a lot more than can be said for about 90% of what is out there these days. So lets just dive right on into this indie comedy horror that is set to hit the streets on November 15th!
The Movie
While backpacking across the country, bickering gay couple Cary and Vogel decide to speed up their trek by hitchhiking instead. That’s when fate brings them Brewster, a sexually-confused trucker who picks the pair up on his way to delivering a shipment of coffins. After a few strokes of bad luck, the mismatched trio ends up lost and broken down in an abandoned junkyard. Though surviving a night of petty fights and sexual tension seems tough enough, the nightmare is only just getting started as strange noises in the back of the truck reveal the presence of five bloodthirsty vampires…
Well I guess we should point out that Evil Ed from the original Fright Night has a part here (not playing Evil Ed), and yes he uses his “So cool” line. I guess that’s because one of our three male leads is actually named “Brewster”. Now, as is the case with most comedy horror, it’s a bit hit and miss here and there. I think it probably doesn’t really start to get anywhere until around 30 or 40 minutes in, it’s around that time when a conversation about zombies not running gained some points from me. It does have some nifty dialogue, but it is sadly hit and miss in other areas.
I also should point out that their is a gay couple in the lead here, and they do get down with some gay-ish activity (I’m in no way bashing anyone gay for the record). Now, don’t get the wrong idea from me bringing that up here. It’s whatever with me, but there are people out there that would like to have that sorta info ahead of time before they watch it. That’s just the way that is in the world today, and I hope I’m not mistaken as homophobic for bring that fact up. But, it’s a MAJOR part of the whole plot. If you don’t care about that, it won’t matter. But if you don’t want to see that, here’s your heads up.
But as far as I’m concerned with this one, gay, straight, or bi it doesn’t matter..but a lot of it doesn’t really work that well. I give them props for trying to add a few new things into the vampire lore, all the while not taking it’s self too seriously. There is also some good makeup and gore here and there as well. But there really wasn’t much about this one to make it standout above all the other vampire films (besides the fact effort is put forth with it). But with all that effort, it just doesn’t have a strong plot, a strong lead, or anything else to make it standout overall. But it’s by no means the worst vampire film I’ve seen this year.
The Conclusion
Well, it’s not my cup of tea and I didn’t find it that memorable, but it’s not terrible and some of you might enjoy it. I at least do like the makeup and the dialogue to a certain extent. So with all of that in mind, I’d probably give this thing a middle of the road score. So, if it sounds like something you’d like, then click HERE and have at it.
