So, Why Stanley Kubrick?

Zombies Don’t Run is mostly known as a horror site. No matter how many old comics, action figures, or Katy Perry related topics I write about, at the end of the day it’s known as a horror site and with good reason. So a question I’m sure a lot of you have on your mind is, “Why have a Stanley Kubrick month on a mostly horror site?”. If we are being honest, Kubrick only had one film that could be tossed in the horror genre, but his work was much larger and much bigger than any single genre. After high school when I first dived head first into my obsession with film, I’d get on these little “movie kicks” where I’d surf the net, find a film people kept talking about, and I’d go out and search and search until I found it. Never once would I use the internet to purchase the film I was looking for, because what’s the fun in that? But more often than not, when I’d look for A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, ect. I’d notice a common theme with the films. More and more films I was in search for were directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Stanley Kubrick, seems to be as strange a man as he was an awesome director. Looking up stories about the late director will find you legend after legend, story after story, about how he’d seemingly torment his cast as he worked on a film. Among the stories of Stanley taking up to 50 or more takes of a scene, you’d hear of him calling up actors in the middle of the night while filming was still going on and asking some very odd questions. During the making of the movie, The Shining, Stanley Kubrick would occasionally call Stephen King at 3:00 a.m. and ask him questions like, “Do you believe in God?”. Rumor is, he’d do the same with actors as well and it would drive some crazy. So, it seems like some people love Stanley, some people at least during working with him hated him, but everyone seems to respect him. And count me among the many movie lovers of the world that also respects this man. And count me among the millions of people no matter if they be fans, actors, bloggers, or what have you, that absolutely love this man’s work.

I could have easily done a month of reviews and topics for any director. I could have did something for Wes Craven, George A. Romero, or even Lucio Fulci. All of which are great horror directors that I also love. But wouldn’t that have been typical? After all, we’ve pretty much covered all major films by those men already. And if there is one thing Stanley Kubrick wasn’t, that would be “typical”. I hope you guys all enjoy this month dedicated to Stanley Kubrick. There will be reviews, random posts, and other things dedicated to this magnificent film maker. And as you’ve noticed with the 2001: A Space Odyssey review yesterday, the reviews have already started. The Reviews will continue tomorrow, but for now I leave you with some amusing videos found on youtube about Stanley Kubrick. I hope you all enjoy them as much as I did.
