Madison County (2011)
Director: Eric England
Where to get it: IMAGE Entertainment

A group of college kids travel to a small, mountain town called Madison County to interview the author of a tell-all book on the accounts of several grisly murders that happened there. But when the kids get to Madison County, the author is nowhere to be found and the towns people act like they haven’t seen him in years, stating that the killer never existed and the murders never happened. However, when the kids start digging around to get their own answers, they find out that the stories may be more real than the townspeople are letting on.

Madison County comes to us with a lot of hype and build. And overall it’s not a film that really does anything wrong, it just never does seem to do anything overly outstanding either. But keeping with the time honored tradition with slasher films, even if they aren’t mind numbingly awesome, they still can remain watchable and fun if done right. And if nothing else, Madison County, does keep it’s self interesting and fun for the most part. One plus is we have a story that isn’t too typical. Some things go down in a way that we aren’t use to in the common slasher. It also gives us characters that aren’t too comedic or gimmicky. We don’t have the usual “Stoner”, “Nerd”, and all that stuff. We more or less just have normal people stuck in a bad situation, which is good.

Some things about this movie did kind of remind me of the slasher, Porkchop. Only this is far more serious and with a better budget. But both do have a pig headed killer and a set-up that somewhat looks alike in some spots. One other things I wish this movie had done was up the blood and gore a bit. We end up with one really cool kill and then the rest is more or less average with a whole lot of shaky camera work going down. I don’t mind that sorta thing from time to time, but it did get a little annoying once or twice here. Also, the ending is a little open as well some details, (setting up for a part 2 I’m sure) but it does give us a bit of a twist on things that we saw coming from a mile away. Still, I’d say this is a film worth a watch. Especially if you love slasher films. Just don’t go into expecting too much.
