The Disco Exorcist (2012)
Director: Richard Griffin
Where to get it: MVD

The most talked about horror movie of the year! From the makers of the cult hit “Nun of That” comes this blood, boob and bellbottom soaked tribute to seventies exploitation sleaze that Twitch calls “Brutal, Blasphemous – a howl from start to finish.” Rex Romanski is a 1970s disco swinger who loves and leaves the wrong woman – the wicked black magic priestess Rita Maria. And now it’s up to Rex to undo the scorned Rita’s rampage of revenge, murder and destruction before she claims more lives, and possesses the soul of the woman he loves. A sexy, irreverent horror comedy – Get Down… and Get Dead!

Its Boogey Night meets the Exorcist in the latest in the growing line of “retro” style films. This one comes from a director who knows a thing or two about exploitation films and it once again shows in his latest offering. This is a film that offers up a 70s style vibe that just about feels as genuine as you could get in in the current decade. It also gives us just as much sex as it does blood and gores, making it never seem to have a dull or boring moment. As for the subject matter, it’s a subject that in this setting shouldn’t be taken too seriously. It’s that same “wink wink” and joking nature that could make or break this one for a whole lot of people. I can tolerate that in some cases and in some cases I can’t. I didn’t mind it at all here and as a result I had a hell of a time with this 70s style splatter fest.

When a film like this comes along you are going to have a lot of things. You’ll have some very outlandish characters. You’ll have blood and excessive nudity. And you’ll have a plot that toes the line between being cool and jumping the proverbial shark. This is a director that does know his stuff, so we get a rare case of a movie that mixes all this stuff together well. It’s probably not going to top another 70s style film, Dear God No, on this year’s year end lists that will be popping up. But I think you could see The Disco Exorcist popping up just right behind it or perhaps even just under it.  If you want sex, blood, and a nice throwback then you’ll want to for sure check out this cool little flick.
