In February, 2001, Robert Hanssen, a senior agent with 25 years in the FBI, is arrested for spying. Jump back two months: Eric O’Neill, a computer specialist who wants to be made an agent is assigned to clerk for Hanssen and to write down everything Hanssen does. O’Neill’s told it’s an investigation of Hanssen’s sexual habits. Within weeks, the crusty Hanssen, a devout Catholic, has warmed to O’Neill, who grows to respect Hanssen. O’Neill’s wife resents Hanssen’s intrusiveness; the personal and professional stakes get higher. How they catch Hanssen and why he spies become the film’s story. Can O’Neill help catch red-handed “the worst spy in history” and hold onto his personal life?

Ah yes, a good “cat and mouse” story. Movies like this are movies I greatly enjoy the first time over but rarely do I feel the need to revisit. I hadn’t seen this one since the year it originally came out but I will admit that I did enjoy my time with this one again. I think a movie like this, if nothing else, shows that Ryan Phillippe has some very good acting chops. Maybe that’s why he seems to always pop up in different projects not too different than this one now. Either way, this one can get tense and that is the best part of it. You often don’t know where it’s going and that is what pushes you to the finish line along with it. If you get nothing else out of this one, you will at least get the thrill of the first time watch.

If you are looking for a movie where you like the good guys and dislike the bad guys, then this is one that does that nicely. It might not blow you away, but I feel it is solid enough. On the tech side of things, much like Mill Creek’s release of The Net, this one has no extras and looks super soft in the HD department. These might be a product of their time thinking about it now, but just don’t go into this disc expecting it to just pop off the screen at you and you should be okay with what you get with it.
