One of the coolest movies ever made!

The Boondock Saints (1999)
Directed By: Troy Duffy

The PrologueNow if you asked me what the greatest and the coolest movie of all time would be, I’d say Pulp Fiction. Back in the day (way back in the day) I had a friend that swore up and down that The Boondock Saints was the actual most bad ass, coolest movie ever made. So I decided to see for myself. And while I ended up loving the film, I didn’t think it was up there on a Pulp Fiction level, but it didn’t miss that mark by much. There’s a whole generation of people that act like this is the greatest movie ever made, and you can KINDA see why after watching it.

The Movie
Two Irish brothers accidentally killed mafia thugs. They turned themselves in and were released as heroes. They then see it as a calling by God and started knocking off mafia gang members one by one. Willem Dafoe plays the detective trying to figure out the killings, but the closer he was to catching the Irish brothers, the more he thinks the brothers are doing the right thing. The bullets fly, cool lines are said, and it all adds up to one of my all time favorite films, even if I think some of you younger folks slightly over-rate it.

You know a movie like this isn’t something that comes along very often. It’s got the right mix of everything, characters, violence, comedy, and dialogue. I think everyone who is in this film was perfectly cast and it gives us a film full of memorable performances and memorable characters. And while we all love The Macmanus Brothers, I think Willem Dafoe makes this movie for me. He’s just cool from start to finish, nutty as a fruitcake, but it just adds to the overall vibe and character and leaves you with something cool that doesn’t come along very often. Duffy to me is just as much what makes this movie great as the brothers, or Rocco, or even the bad ass ways of Il Duce.

Not many people can make dialogue work, but director Troy Duffy can. With this film he had me thinking that maybe he was up there with the likes of Quentin Tarantino. This is among one of the most quotable movies I have ever seen, and who can see it without stealing a few lines from our pal Rocco? I don’t know about you guys but I just hate it when I can’t even buy a pack of smokes without runnin’ into nine guys you f***! Oooops, see there!? It’s hard to even write a review for the film without quoting it at least once.

While I also love the way the movie shows you the aftermath of a Macmanus mission first before it shows you how it actually went down, I do think the brothers just really seem to take out the bad guys a little too easy. Now that’s only a slight mark against the film as the rest of it is damn near perfect. As I said at the start of this review, I wouldn’t put it above Pulp Fiction but I’d say it does at least come a little close. It’s a really cool movie, maybe just slightly corny, but good all the same.

The Conclusion
Have anyone not seen this movie yet??? If so then you should rush out right now and watch this thing one way or another. I believe we’ll still be talking about this movie YEARS from now even if the director did kind of shoot himself in the foot down the road after it was made. While there is a sequel, I really don’t think it ever needed one and we’ll cover that soon enough, but as for this film, it’s just pure awesome-ness!
