Back in the year of 2002, your humble blogger here was in the process of graduating high school. And more importantly I was hitting my stride in my movie going, as I’d go to the movies sometimes two or three times in the same week. It was on the weekend of January 25th of that year that I for once balked at seeing a movie my friends wanted to see. They wanted see the film adaptation of, A Walk to Remember. I, being the horror movie/comic book movie lover that I was, didn’t want to see that. I mean, come on now! That was a damn chick flick! But it did have Mandy Moore in it…
I’m about to spoil this film, so if you’ve not already read the book or seen the film you may want to stop reading now..Mandy Moore plays the cancer stricken character of, Jamie Sullivan in A Walk to Remember and she ends up dieing at the end. So, seeing as how I was always pretty fond of Mandy Moore, I did NOT want to see that. I had never read the book, but I knew the character had cancer. So when opening night came and I saw something else with a few friends and saw the girlfriends of my other friends walk out of A Walk to Remember crying like babies, I just KNEW she died in the movie. And I’ll be damned if I was going to see this happen! Any girlfriend I had at the time could go watch it by herself or with some other dude, I didn’t care. I was not watching Mandy Moore die on screen..No sir! Not in 2002. Then it hit video on demand (did they call it that then?) later that year. At this time I STILL didn’t want to see it, but one of my best friends promised me, “She doesn’t die in the movie!”. My friend was a damned liar.
Or was he? Sure, she didn’t die on screen, but she does die at the end. But if you don’t take that into consideration, A Walk to Remember was a damn fine film. And Mandy Moore in that role of Jamie was perfect. I don’t think she’s ever hit her stride in any other film like she did in, A Walk to Remember. And wasn’t Jamie Sullivan just about as perfect of a character as you could have? I mean hear me out on this here, she was like the blueprint for the perfect girlfriend. I think if there was one bad thing about her at all, it was the fact she fell for the typical bad boy type in, Landon. But not counting that, she was what every guy should be looking for in a woman..PLUS SHE WAS MANDY MOORE!!!
I don’t usually admit this to people (and my horror credit is about to go out the window), but I owned a copy of A Walk to Remember on VHS. It’s hard to put it into words, but I had a major respect for that movie. And apparently my Dad did as well, seeing how he borrowed it in 2004 and I’ve never seen it again since. But none the less, Jamie Sullivan is the type of girl all us guys should be gunning for..Just watch out for their overly preachy fathers.
And now for your listening pleasure, I close this out with a song from A Walk to Remember. Mandy Moore’s “Cry”
