It’s different..but still..
Not Another B Movie (2010)
Directed By: John Wesley Norton
The Prologue
So, lets see what happens in the background as one makes a horror film with the film, Not Another B Movie. A film that is a Troma release, but besides having the Troma name on it, I don’t really feel like it seems too much like a normal Troma release, unless they’ve started really incorporating different types of films into their ranks these days. What you get here is well acted and different, but that about where the compliments have to stop and the complaints start to begin. So let’s all take a look at another B movie that is every so cleverly titles, Not Another B Movie.
The Movie
An adept spoof of cinema’s behind-the-scenes experiences, Not Another B Movie combines frightening and disgusting zombies with frightening and disgusting hack directors to tell a hilarious story. Or perhaps I should say a semi-interesting story, but it’s not packing much in the sizzle department to go along with the steak that is the actual concept of the film. So while I can appreciate the concept (and the few pretty well known stars that pop up), I just found really hard to get into a film of this nature.
So a man is making a movie. He goes to a place to meet with some other people that are behind the movie and they all have ideas that sometimes clash with one another. That’s pretty much the story of the film. And we do have glimpses of their ideas in live action on the screen, which pretty much makes the film watchable at times. We see scenes with a crazed baseball umpire, two cops that can’t get along, and even some zombie action. That’s all good and fun, but it really doesn’t fit well with one another, even with the brain storming concept. And due to that, things get a little too messy for their own good.
The acting here isn’t anything we can turn a nose to. It’s actually acceptable and helps this from falling any lower down the quality ranking than it already does. You can see the frustration that comes with making a film, you can see the writers frustration, so in that way it does help the movie a lot. It’s just, the movie as a whole doesn’t work at all. And it’s due to that fact (the movie overall being a bit of a mess) that makes it extremely hard to really like it. Once you notice that what you get in the first twenty minutes is what you’ll get from start to finish, it just gets repetitive and dull.
So when you sum this one up, it’s a good concept but a weak overall plot. The acting is good, but without a real direction the acting is just running in place. You really wish at times when the film cuts to one of the live reenactments of the writers ideas that THAT is the movie you get, but it’s not and it’s over too soon for those moments to really count. So it’s a nice try, but it just doesn’t work and the film just can’t see to hold your attention. But nice effort anyway, I suppose.
The Conclusion
I’m afraid this was a film I just couldn’t really get into and I found watching it a bit of a struggle. However, if you’d like to try your hand with it, you can get this Troma release at CAV (where they have tons of cool stuff by the way). I like when people try not concepts in films, but I really like it when that new concept works. This one didn’t work that well in my opinion.
