Killjoy (2000)
Director: Craig Ross Jr.
Where to get it: Echo Bridge
Michael, a reserved high school student, has always been an outcast among his peers. One day, the bullying goes too far and he endures his final beating. Now a new face is in town, ready to exact Michael’s revenge. His name is Killjoy and he thinks murder is a laughing matter. And I think I speak for everyone when I say that everyone loves a clown, right? Killjoy isn’t IT by any means, but he still isn’t too shabby.
When we left the 90s, Full Moon was looking to make a comeback. They decided they needed to establish some new franchises, and as a result the world got, Killjoy. This being the original Killjoy, people who have just recently been tuned into the series from only seeing part 3, might be a little shocked at what you get with this film. It’s very urban. We have gangsters, we got clowns, and we got a villain here that is very charismatic and reminds me a whole lot of Freddy from A Nightmare on Elm Street in some ways. I’m a fan of Trent Haaga too, but there is something really awesome about the way actor, Ángel Vargas, does the role of Killjoy. While this movie seems to be notoriously panned online and on IMDB, I must confess that its a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. Intentional or not, this funny covers up a great deal of it’s short comings with some over the top and corny stuff. And the funny is for sure capped off by the awkward performances of the cast, the corny dialogue, and our cool killer clown.
The film does a fine job of setting it’s self up as a revenge flick, only it gets a little too cute with the plot. As you all know, the easiest way to get from point A to point B is a straight line. The film gets there really quick, then it zig zags it’s way around way too much, almost to a comedic point (in the so bad it’s amusing way). So in a way, you could say that they drag the ending out way too long and once we do reach the ending, the film just seems to keep going a bit and runs far too long. Still, I think we have a movie that is a lot of fun. One of those good “bad” movies that can do a great job perking people up if played around a bunch of friends or in a party setting. So, while this movie isn’t by any means on a “Halloween” type level, it’s much better than the 2.1 it has gotten from IMDB.
