Dropping Evil (2012) (DVD Review)

Dropping Evil (2012)
Director:  Adam Protextor
Where to get it: MVD

After his friends slip him LSD on a camping trip, ultra-nerdy Nancy hallucinates that they are evil beings and begins to systematically hunt them down. Meanwhile, a mysterious corporation monitors the entire event for their own hidden purpose. This opens up a bit of a can of worms with this film as things get very complicated in a very short amount of time.

What we have here is a film with old school style slasher elements that gets very different before it wraps up. That makes what could have been a simple and effective story very different. Some may love the different it brings and there are others who might just hate it. I’m a little torn on it myself. On a plus side it’s a short film so things get going rather quickly. Then on the other hand the story is so complicated in nature that most of what we see isn’t explained until we get what I assume is a fake trailer at the end of a sequel. That is different and that is clever. But at the same time a move like that makes things at a level where they might be too clever for their own good when it comes to the masses.

But I did like the movie for the most part overall. It commits minor errors along the way in its creative nature and in its editing; still it remains mostly on the positive. It does get a little comedic and slap sticky at times, but I didn’t hate that. I also feel like I should point out that I loved the music in this movie. There were more than a few songs I’d like to have on my mp3 player. That is very rare for an indie film, so kudos to these guys for that. If you like slashers, this is mostly a slasher and you should dig it. Just make sure you go into this one with an open mind.
