Purge takes place in a utilitarian, genetically engineered parallel universe. Layla, a BDSM mistress, just wants to fit and be happy…but her nemesis won’t let her.
When you take a long look at a film like this you become a little torn if you have similar taste as I do. On one hand this is a film that sure does go above and behind the basics of editing to make this lower budget film stand out and look like something special. And I can give major props to the editing and the style of what we see here. Heck, I’d even give props to the story, as complex as it is. But theory and good editing doesn’t make a good film on its own. And it is in the meat and potatoes portion of this one when we take a look at what is on the other hand were we start having issues.
Sadly, I didn’t find this to be a movie with a story that reaches out and grabs you, sucking you in to be interested. While complicated and much thought out, I found the plot to be somewhat boring. We have bells and whistles, but they just attempt to cover up how weak and dull everything seems to be underneath. I wouldn’t call our lead very likeable, nor would I say anyone here is likeable. And at times things seem to happen just for the sake of being weird. Cyberpunk fans might be the target and that is a target that it could hit. As for the rest of us, I’m not so sure we will be really able to connect with this one at the end of the day.
