Laura Harring, Naomi Watts. Betty is a small-town girl who comes to Hollywood with stars in her eyes and looking for sidewalks of gold. Instead, she finds an amnesiac woman in her aunt’s apartment in David Lynch’s cryptic, delusional story about ambition and desire.
If you are a fan of David Lynch you know what to expect here. We have an over two hour long odyssey that blurs the lines between real and dream. The film builds a mystery for the majority of its running time, but at the two hour mark then gets extremely odd or perhaps extremely obvious depending on your way of seeing things. The film is filled with very weird moments and some sub-plots are left out to dry without resolution or explanation. Could this be left over from the pilot? This was meant to be a TV show at one point. Or is this simply how David Lynch wanted and the lack of a conclusion is there to help us solve the overall mystery? We may never know for sure, but the film is totally interesting and well acted regardless.
The bottom line is this movie won’t be for everyone. There may even be some who hate it for the very same reasons that others will love it. I knew to expect this sort of thing going into the movie because I have seen many of David Lynch’s films and know that strange things happen in them. So, that being the case I got what I expected here with this and I greatly enjoyed it. Is it weird? Heck yes it is. Yet, I still find it extremely interesting and well worth watching in order to try to solve the mystery.
