Duncan’s (Ken Marino) mounting stress starts to trigger an insufferable gastrointestinal reaction. Out of ideas and at the end of his rope, Duncan seeks the help of a hypnotherapist, who helps him discover the root of his unusual stomach pain: a pint-sized demon living in his intestine that, triggered by excessive anxiety, forces its way out and slaughters the people who have caused Duncan stress. Out of fear that his intestinal gremlin may target its wrath on the wrong person, Duncan attempts to befriend it, naming it Milo and indulging it to keep its seemingly insatiable appetite at bay.
The spirit of Frank Henenlotter is alive and well in this film about a monster that lives in someone’s anus! That concept makes for a great idea and some nice fun for about 80 something minutes. Duncan is having some very disturbing and funny to watch stomach problems. He is beyond stressed out. And, on top of all of that, to spite having a great wife (played perfectly by the lovely Gillian Jacobs), his father issues among other things is just too much to bare. As we soon learn, when he gets too stressed, Milo, the creature from his backside, pops out and seeks to take care of the stress for Duncan personally. It is pretty funny for the most part and only has very little dragging moments.
The film does pull back a little from going too far out there into the gross and gore side of things. The idea in general is nasty, but they could have done much more in the effects department that we just don’t see here in the film. I think the fact that they played it safe makes it a very good movie, but not a great movie. Still, fans of the weirder side of comedic horror will be very pleased with the results. For you Blu-ray freaks out there, you will be pleased to hear that you get a great transfer that looks about as good as you would hope for in new releases.
