When a group of young friends commemorating their high school graduation take a trip to the remote Black Lake, their celebration turns into a nightmare. Trapped in a leaking boat with no oars, the teens face the ultimate test of friendship and sacrifice during a terror-stricken fight for survival when they find something is living beneath the surface.
Beneath delivers. I don’t know any other way to word it other than just being straight forward. Here we have a movie that does everything it tries to do right and it is a fun and at times bloody film that tells a great story about some not so great people. After these teens get stuck with a flesh eating fish on the lake they take the route of soon finding their own issues with one another and it makes for a movie that you just never can seem to predict, which is great. I was never bored for a single moment with this.
The monster in question looks a little goofy, but that is part of the overall charm. The movie comes across as a bit of a throwback and while not trying to copy nostalgia it makes it’s own trip back into old school horror when things were fun. I wish more new films that come out these day were as fun as this one and as good. You have a cool story, good actors, and some nice gore filled moment. You also end up with a transfer that looks near perfect making the best use of the cameras used. There are some moments of grain, but the movie otherwise looks great.
