A break out at a maximum security prison and the slaying of a young waitress at a roadside diner mark the beginning of a brutal killing spree, but the identity of the serial killer and his true motivation remain a mystery until the film’s terrifying end.
Take a concept in the same area as August Underground, clean it up a bit, and add a highly charismatic villain to narrate us throughout the whole thing, and then you end up with The Last Horror Movie. A movie that takes the found footage concept and makes it seem as if we have rented a horror VHS only to have found this film’s bad guy had taped over it with his own snuff film. That is pretty much the biggest part of the movie. The rest is made up with what takes place our host toys with us a bit, spreads some social commentary, but most importantly entertains us and the film is entertaining as a whole. Sure, it is a format better fit for VHS, but looking away from that what we get is good enough, even on DVD.
Again, I must point out that our lead, played by Kevin Howarth, is brilliant in this role. He makes the movie and without him in this role it would be an OK found footage movie with a bit of a different concept tossed on top. He makes up for any shortcoming of the film and makes it as fun as it is. He also is why the movie at times gets as creepy as it gets. I don’t know if there a lot of folks out there that will get and understand a movie like this, but those who do should find it enjoyable enough and truly appreciate the concept. Check it out for the lead’s performance if nothing else.
