Some movies play it safe. Is God Is looked at “playing it safe,” laughed in its face, and drove off in a stolen car. This thing is a strange cocktail of revenge thriller, dark comedy, western, and fever dream. Every time I thought I had it figured out, it swerved into another lane. Normally, that kind of thing can be a complete disaster… but here it somehow works. It never feels like it’s trying to be weird just so film students can nod thoughtfully while stroking invisible beards. It earns its oddball personality.
What really sold me is that it genuinely feels like something different. That’s becoming rarer these days. So many movies feel like they were assembled from the same handful of templates, but Is God Is has its own identity. Even when it’s messy, it’s its mess, and I’d rather watch an ambitious swing than another cookie-cutter movie that I’ll forget before the credits finish rolling.
The cast commits to the madness, the dialogue has plenty of bite, and there’s a dry sense of humor running underneath all the revenge and brutality that kept catching me off guard. I found myself laughing at moments where I probably shouldn’t have been… which usually means the movie is doing something right.
Is every creative choice going to land for everyone? Absolutely not. There will be people who bail after twenty minutes wondering what planet this thing came from. I get it. But if you’re willing to meet it on its own terms, there’s a lot to appreciate.
Sometimes the best compliment you can give a movie isn’t that it’s perfect—it’s that you can’t think of many other movies that feel quite like it. Is God Is definitely earns that compliment.
