Clay (2007) (DVD Review)

Rated: UR/Region: 1/1:33/Number of disc: 1

plot

Clay is a killer. He walks the streets, picking his victims by fate. Behind his madness lies Sam, his father, a man who unknowingly raised a serial killer by filling his child’s head with years upon years of evil stories, lies, bitterness, abuse and fear. Now Clay has grown up, and his father’s vicious rule over him is headed to a certain end… Several tragedies, years apart, converge into one violent and brutal climax.

howsthemovie

Clay is a film with a lot of psychological elements to it. We clearly are in a world with people who have deep running mental issues and these issues are the downfall of everyone and everything around them. From the lead character Clay to his father to the young girl next door, everyone is very odd and awkward. Still, while extrememly slow moving at times, this movie does a fine job of telling the story it tells and it does keep you watching from start to finish, even if perhaps some of the running time could have stood to been clipped a bit.

The movie isn’t an all out gore affair, but it does pack some very creepy visuals and images that can stick with you. I also think the acting here is way above what you might expect from a film on this level with this small of a budget. This isn’t a film that will appeal to the masses, but it will be liked by some. And, for what it’s worth, I do think this is a very clever and well-made movie.

Midnight 2: Sex, Death and Videotape (2008) (DVD Review)
Directed By: John A. Russo
Starring: Jo Norcia, Lori Scarlett, Matthew Jason Walsh
Rated: UR/Region: 1/1:33/Number of disc: 1
Available from SRS CINEMA

plot

No on will ever be able to forget the unspeakable atrocities committed one dark midnight at the Barnes farmhouse. Now, years later, Abraham (Matthew Jason Walsh), the last surviving member of the crazed family, has taken up residence in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. Armed with a video camera and his various implements of death, he stalks the streets of the city to satisfy his bloodlust…searching the psyches of his victims for his perfect mate. Enter Rebecca (Jo Norcia), a beautiful young bank teller who has unwittingly come under Abraham’s deadly camera lens. With the help of a hard-boiled police detective (Chuck Pierce), she may be able to solve the murder of her best friend…or become the ultimate sacrifice in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse.

howsthemovie

I’ve never seen the original Midnight, but this film did pack a lot of flashbacks and it looked pretty darn good. I WISH I could say the same for this sequel here. Oddly enough it is from John A. Russo and you’d expect great things from that man because he has given us great things. This movie, however, just seems very lazy and uninspired. The movie also gets really dull as we listen to our lead just ramble and ramble into the camera for most of the film.

I hate to admit it, but the best thing about Midnight 2 is the flashback to Midnight. If you loved that film I can’t imagine you ever getting anything of value from this. I found it to be extremely boring, lazy, and as much as I dislike saying it; a cash in attempt on the fans of the original. John A. Russo has given us many great things in the world of horror, but believe me when I tell you Midnight 2 isn’t at all one of those things.

I Spit Chew On Your Grave! (2009) (DVD Review)
Directed By: Chris Seaver
Starring: Chris Seaver, Josh Suire
Rated: UR/Region: 1/1:33/Number of disc: 1
Available from SRS CINEMA

plot

What happens when a group of busty Chics, pimped out by their mystical magical warlock leader, rapes the wrong man and a load of vengeance is heaped down upon them for such a dastardly deed? You must watch this unflinching tale of sheer degradation and buffoonery to find out. In the tradition of “”I Spit On Your Grave”” and “”Poon Academy”” comes this rousing over the top send up of all things 70′s exploitation!

howsthemovie

I am usually a little hit and miss with the work of Chris Seaver and I’m afraid in this case I may have been more miss than hit with his I Spit Chew on Your Grave. On one hand I do appreciate the effort that went into making this movie and it does in-fact have a fair share of funny moments, but it just seems to be lacking in some areas and moments when the movie does just sort of stall out. These moments usually have nice looking women dancing around, but there comes a time when you just want to move things along.

What you get here is very elaborate characters that are very loud and gimmick driven. Some of you might not mind that, but I’m sure some of you will have a strong dislike for it. Still, you got to appreciate what you get here regardless due to the amount of effort and work that you know when into making this little movie. If you like other Chris Seaver films you will have a better chance of appreciating this. If you don’t like this, you probably won’t care for this one at all.

howsthemovie

This is an interesting project to say the least. Here, we have a mix of random horror scenes with rock music playing over, which probably really adds to the overall experience of you do enjoy the music you get here. If you don’t, then you might at least enjoy the scenes. I saw a view myself that made me want to at least search out the film that the scene was taken from. The music on the other hand was really hit and miss.

However, at least we can’t call it a lazy project. There was an attempt to try something new here. Did it work? Maybe not as much as they’d hope. But, if I was a small child watching something like this with a creepy voice telling me that some crazed madman was on the loose and heading my way could have caused a thrill. Now days I just found it amusing and perhaps for mostly all the wrong reasons. I do give credit to the concept, but it isn’t my cup of tea at the end of the day.

Holla If You Hear Me Kill You! (2006) (DVD Review)
Directed By: Mark Harris
Starring: Artek, Sheree Bynum, Danielle Carter
Rated: UR/Region: 1/1:33/Number of disc: 1
Available from SRS CINEMA

plot

A couple of singers and their friends are working late at their studio when a masked serial killer shows up and ruins all the fun. Who could this mysterious killer be and why does he want to kill the singers? As the night progresses, this label is loosing more and more of its clients. Will anyone survive?

howsthemovie

We take a Scream-ish concept to the world of hip hop in this film that seems to be a lot more humorous than it was meant to be. Rap stars and singers (and a lot more) are dropping like flies and everyone is point the finger at one another. We also have two of these guys that get nose to nose for what seems like a zillion times before they get into a shove fight. The movie does indeed drag and I’m not sure we have enough blood here to make up for the fact. It is easy to get bored and I don’t know if many of you will be able to hold your attention to this one in the long run.

The movie does at least make you ponder from time to time about who is the killer. And, I think if the movie was a bit shorter it would have helped matters a lot. The movie isn’t a movie that runs any longer than usual, but it does drag and it and repeat it’s self and that hurts it a lot. The movie seems like it wants to be an urban Scream and it falls very short of that. If you like slashers you might give it a shot, but don’t go into it expecting much.
