In Conquest, horror legend, Lucio Fulci, takes the very popular at the time “Sword and Sorcery” genre and inserts his bloody mind bending style into it to create a film that might not always make sense, but it will hold your attention. Any film from Fulci is always anything but typical and what we get here is some very outlandish creatures and monsters being unleashed on the screen at two heroes on a journey and while some may look somewhat hokey, they oddly fit in this strange and foggy (both figuratively and literally with the films style) world we see on the screen. You may have seen your fair share of sword and sorcery films, but if you haven’t seen Conquest you’ve never seen one like this.

If this movie could be found guilty of anything negative, it could be the slower build and pace of the film. It also may leave us asking more questions than we’d perhaps like to. The film seems to leave the door open for a sequel that of course we never got. But if the movie does do one thing right, and I won’t dare spoil it, it would be things do NOT go like you might expect them to go. We have more than one curve tossed at us and if you were starting to drift off after things slow down these scenes do a fine job of waking you up. This isn’t a perfect film by any means, but it’s well done and a lot of fun.
