I hate to sound like a “Hipster”, which at the very core of it’s existence is a term for someone who hates what’s popular. But I must take the risk of sounding like a broken record by once again stating the fact that I REALLY hate Spike TV’s Scream Awards.
Now I won’t lie, when the whole thing first started I was all for it. An awards show that most people want to label a horror award show, but at the very least it DOES state it’s self as a horror, fantasy, and sci-fi award show. I was under the impression that it would be a really cool concept, and while some of the sneak peeks of up and coming films were cool, I must admit now that if I ever through it would be cool and interesting in the long run, then I was sadly wrong. It also didn’t take long to figure out that all this show was, was a chance for people to see who can get their language bleeped while on the air the most and that the add on of fantasy and what not was just the excuse for the whole show to sell it’s soul to the teens and the money cow that is such franchises as Twilight and Harry Potter. I mean let’s be honest with ourselves, was Scott Pilgrim vs. the World or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 REALLY worthy of The Ultimate Scream Award? Fantasy perhaps, (Which Scott Pilgrim vs. the World got skipped on) but THE Ultimate Scream???..Give me a break.
Now of course I can’t hate the player I can only hate the game and it would be somewhat of a dick move for me to bash Spike TV for latching it’s self on to what’s making money (with UFC jumping to FOX I guess they need all they can get), but to see a show that once was filled of soo much promise dwindled down to building up a two hour show to a new Twilight trailer is just sad. And it’s also sad to hear “John and Jenny Noname” out and about talking of how cool the show is because they love Twilight and Harry Potter. Things are how they are going to be and there isn’t any changing that, but it just makes my head hurt. I know people want to say that such film award shows as the ever so precious OSCARS have lost their touch and no longer have a clue what the people of today want and are interested in. But still, The Scream Awards are NOT the right answer to countering that. As a matter of fact, I’d go as far as to say that the Scream Awards are a perfect example of what’s wrong with the mainstream media and the fans of it today. And for whatever reason, Spike TV are content with presenting this thing in the most obnoxious way possible.
None the less, feast your eyes on the categories and their nominations.
