Inspired by real events. The search for a missing nine-year old girl exposes a dark world of lost and emotionally unstable teenage girls who are responsible for the girl’s disappearance and eventual murder. A raw and fascinating portrait of the alienation and despair found in teenagers who have been left to fend for their own emotional purpose. Based on the true crime of fifteen-year old Alyssa Bustamante who murdered her 9-year old neighbor Elizabeth Olten in 2009, and is currently in prison serving a life sentence.
This controversial movie is finally making its way to DVD and what it holds is more or less a very dark character film, one that is somewhat hard to watch at certain points. You know everything you see on the screen is leading to something bad that is going to happen, but you just aren’t sure what is coming or when. That is if you aren’t aware of the very true event this story is apparently based on. I give all the credit in the world to the cast, because you have to have people who are good to pull a film like this off. The cast, no matter how young or what they are doing on screen, all seem to fit their roles flawlessly and that makes it what it is above all else. There might be some parts you could find slow, but if that is the case you do have an option of a short version of the film in the extras.
I also think I must mention that we have a film here that at times dips over into the art film area. Does that work? I’d say so, but I could also see how come might be a little turned away when characters are going into daydreams filled with musical numbers. Still, it all fits and works for what it is intended to be. I could have done without the on screen acts of puking, but I also understand that is a real thing that isn’t meat to be easy to watch. If you like dark character films that are a bit on the artistic side, then you might find a movie like this one to be right up your ally.
