The series follows the adventures of Gary Wallace (John Mallory Asher) and Wyatt Donnelly (Michael Manasseri), two socially inept high school students in a Farber town in California. Together, using Wyatt’s computer, they try to create a computer simulation of a perfect woman in order to practice communicating with women. However, a freak lightning storm brings her to life, creating Lisa (Vanessa Angel) – a drop-dead gorgeous genius with the powers of a “magic genie”
I use to love the show Weird Science. As a matter of fact, I remember watching WWF RAW on the USA Network and seeing commercials for the show and I remember setting up to watch the show when it aired. I actually saw this show before I ever saw the movie it was based on and while I now do love the movie as well, I might lean a little more towards the show as my “go to” for Weird Science. I am a big fan of nostalgia. So Austrailia’s Via Vison really got me when they released the whole series on a DVD set. As far as I’m aware only two seasons were ever released here in the states, so something like this is really past due. For five seasons and 88 episodes, I watched as Gary and Wyatt would often get into trouble that Lisa (the computer-generated woman) would often help them out of. All the while they dodged such things as Wyatt’s bully brother Chett. I admit that Vanessa Angel who played Lisa in the series was one of my very first crushes and I to this day have a soft spot for her. You might not think that such a 90’s show would hold up well today, but it totally does and this set is a joy to sit and watch as I revisit past episodes I had long forgotten about.
You may recall when the show first aired and was canceled by USA that the final six episodes were never aired on the USA Network and were never seen until the show was re-aired on the Sci-Fi channel. Oddly enough, I had never seen those until I saw them on this awesome DVD set of the show. Hard to believe that I never did see the finale until now, but it is always better to be late than never. Also, on this set, you’ll find that special episodes have audio commentaries, which if you didn’t have a good enough reason to get this before, you sure do now. All in all, this is a great set for a great show and if you want to see the entire series this DVD set from Via Vision Entertainment is the way to go!
