After discovering an urban legend of a demented serial killer, who has nothing but a carved ‘smiley’ on his face, a mentally fragile teen must decide whether she is going insane – or will be the next victim.
It is very rare that a movie comes across my desk that seems to lack any real redeemable values, but finally I have a seen a movie that fits the bill and it’s called Smiley. Don’t get me wrong, I had heard horror stories about this one long before I ever got to see it. I had just safely assumed that it would be so bad it was good, along the lines of a Troll 2. But take my word on it, this movie is just BAD. We are introduced to a mess of a plot with a chat room killer who seems to be along the lines of a cyber-Freddy. Any legs that comparison has to stand on seems to be blown to bits once we see the over the top and none believable twist at the end that doesn’t add up anyway you look at it.
Not to mention the movie offers up some of the most annoying characters you’ll ever find on film. From our leading lady, to our school professor, to our detectives, none of the people we see in this film are likeable. What is worse is the fact that it becomes clear as this movie rolls along that everyone involved here is just so certain that they are making this generations Scream. This is no Screams, my friends. One line about how this Halloween everyone will be dressed as Smiley just had me shaking my head. Truth is, people will probably always remember this movie. But they won’t be remembering it for being anything other than perhaps the worst film we have seen in about twenty years. I’m sure this film will get a cult following on the fact. I’m also sure the DVD units will move based off reputation. I’m just here to tell you that you won’t be missing anything if you were to decide to take the warning to heart and avoid this one.
