Three desperate men become unwilling participants in a hellish game of blackjack – the stakes: the frightening fates that await each of them. Like other classic horror anthologies of the past, THE DARK DEALER blends supernatural horror, action and sensuality into a sinister stew with an explosive climax.
The Dark Dealer is a bit of a mixed bag as far as anthology films go. We have a cool concept, even if some of the effects we see very early on are cheesy. The movie starts off great with our first segment and that may just be the high point of the film. This segment reminds us of something we’d see on an episode of Tales from the Darkside. However, things do take a nose dive after that. And, I’m sorry to report we never do reach that level again.
We do get a very interesting and entertaining shady character in our last portion of the film. I think the acting isn’t too shabby when you consider all things. There is a middle segment that I haven’t even mentioned yet. This is for a reasons, I feel it is pretty awful overall and brings this movie down as a whole. A better middle portion of this movie and we could have a classic on our hands, in some form or fashion. Since that isn’t the case, we have an alright movie that does at least have a great opening section.
