Beyond Remedy (2009)
Directed By: Gerhard Hroß (Unter Wasser)

The Prologue
Attention all movie watcher, attention all movie watchers, we are about to leave you’re comfort zone of watching movies made in the good ol’ U.S. of A and more well known areas like Japan, or Italy and take a tour of the horror section in Germany. I can not promise you you’ll enjoy this trip but you have a complementary pillow behind you just comfortably enough for you to take a nap if you feel the need while watching Beyond Remedy.

Have I gave away that it isn’t that good yet?

The Movie
An international group of medical students takes part in a seminar on fear – with deadly results…Hello people with funny accents and funny line delivery! What we got right here gang is a German horror film so it’s like we are going on a bit of trip around the world with this one. However, if this is any indication of what Germany films are like, thanks but no thanks, I’d rather keep my imported movie watching to more Asian related areas!

Marie Zielcke is our leading lady here playing Julia and she just annoyed me throughout the whole thing. I don’t know if it was just her weird accent or the way she said things but she didn’t click for me at all, nor did her love interest in the film who looks like a bug eye’d Toby McGuire. So acting isn’t the film’s strong point you could say.

But regardless, with this film you can have a hard time figuring out if you’re watching a slasher, a ghost story, or just some type of physiological thriller. It tends to run off into all of those area at one time or another and it created a weird vibe. A vibe that times seems like it’s weird in a good way, and at other times weird in this “this is rather boring” way.

I for one can’t believe these folks would stick around in a treatment facility that looks like this one does. I mean it’s clear the place is not only a dump but from going by the lighting the man paying the bills saves a ton when the electric bill rolls in. The main Doctor of the place is played by David Gant and I will happily say he’s the best character in the whole thing. Playing the very shady yet interesting Gingrich you never can really tell if he’s behind what is going on or not, that’s an unsure element of the movie I really liked.

Another thing I liked was the gore as apparently Germany knows how to do the stuff with natural effects sparing us the crappy looking CGI. You may get a bit bored while watching this, you may find some stuff a little too silly, but you won’t be disappointed when someone ends up with glass all in their grill.

The Conclusion
The movie gets what it gets from me here just for the pure fact I loved the gore. If it wasn’t for that we’d probably be dealing with something in the 4′s. The jump scenes just don’t make you jump and there’s nothing much to get emotionally attached to.

So how to do you say mediocre in German?
