Someone is missing!!…Good thing Leo is here to find them.
Shutter Island (2010)
Directed By: Martin Scorsese (The Departed,Taxi Driver)
The Prologue
Leonardo DiCaprio..the man who thanks to Titanic made me get all teary eyed like a wussy way back when I went to watch Titanic in 7th grade. And no matter what anyone says his death in that was avoidable because I think they could have shared that door in the water until help arrived..anyway.
What we got here with Shutter Island is Leo once again teaming up with a man who simply makes good movies in Martin Scorsese. Do I think all his work is great? No, but I do think most of it is pretty good. So what do we get with his first trip into a more horror based story? I think what we get is something really awesome.
The Movie
Set in 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island. You can also bet there is some rather freaky stuff going on under the surface and it will leave you trying to decide what is real and what isn’t.
You know I’ve never been the biggest fan of Leonardo DiCaprio and I know in a Scorsese movie you’re going to have to deal with a terrible accent coming from him but I can say he does a great job in this movie. Sure at times he seems to just be a little too far off the mark with stuff but for the most part he comes across pretty spot on with what is going on and he makes the character of Teddy Daniels entertaining if not likable.
While most folks want to play this off as not being a horror movie it has just enough weird things going to fully pass as one in my book. The movie somewhat reminds you of The Shining but it has soo many other elements of other movies mixed in with it that this is a movie that could cross different genres but rest a sure horror is for sure one of them. You may find yourself more pumped than scared during some scenes but I think what we get is something any horror fan can and should appreciate.
Shutter Island runs a little long but it’s easy to get sucked right into as you yourself somewhat take on the role of a investigator while watching (assuming you haven’t read the book) trying to make sense of everything that you see on the screen. You go through the emotional changes of thinking perhaps everyone is behind some major set up, to thinking perhaps that Ted is just crazy, but you keep interest in it for the whole two plus hour period the films runs.
Now I don’t do spoilers in reviews but I should bring up (without spoiling anything) that there’s a lot of folks that can’t seem to wrap their heads around the ending. I have no idea how this is possible as it’s pretty clear by the time the film ends just what is going on and while I’ll admit I was shocked at what I seen I can admit it made a whole lot of sense to me. Now was it the best ending possible for the movie? Well I’m not sure but I think it does what the writer intended and throws a pretty bitter curve ball at the audience.
The Conclusion
The best movie of 2010 so far!..I know we are only in March but it is VERY good and just keep and open mind when you watch and the ending should make a whole lot more sense to you.
Leo, I may have to finally forgive you for not kicking that girl off the door in Titanic!
