I spent a great deal of my youth at the local dairy bar where in between waiting on my burger and fries and eating my burger and fries I’d spend quarter after quarter on the arcade version of Double Dragon. A game that at that very young age I wasn’t very good at but would have still told everyone it was the greatest game ever!
After the wonderful Nintendo came out and I got one of those I also got the Nintendo version of Double Dragon and later Double Dragon 2 and played both until my heart was content! Sadly I never beat either but they were still awesome to me.
Then we fast forward to the year 1994 when a movie based on the cartoon based on the game (got all that?) came out and I foolishly thought it was going to be awesome and I’m still suffering the effects today of the horrible film I saw on the screen that raped the name of Double Dragon.
Double Dragon should have been a hard R folks, maybe even close to a NC17 based on violence alone, yet what we got was a joke and nothing more. Gone was any real element of what made the games fun and it’s a wrong that I feel should be righted and righted soon. It seems like we want to remake everything now days from Let The Right One In to Mungo Lake, which while British is already in English so make sense of that one. I’ve spoke briefly about remaking Double Dragon before and I think it should be right at the top of the list along with Mortal Kombat for films that actually need a remake.
And really what’s not to love about Double Dragon? The plot follows two twin brother Billy Lee and Jimmy Lee as they fight off the gang known as The Black Warriors to save a girl they are both in love with named Marian. What follows is knee to the head action that would just be awesome to see acted out live on the big screen. Also while I’ve never beat the game myself, I have seen it beaten before and if you stick to the true story there’s a heck of a twist that comes at the end. If done right we are taking a night and day comparison to the bastardized movie that is already out there.
How about casting? Well you’d just have to have a pretty boy mixed in somewhere so to please the suits you could cast that Sean Faris guy for the role of Billy Lee. I seen the guy in Never Back Down and he could work for the spot oddly enough. I won’t get knee deep in the fantasy casting but I’d for sure want WWE’s Kane for the role of the giant Abobo. And for Marian? Well, would you blame me if I said Katy Perry??
Well, maybe I’m not the best for casting decisions but I do think it needs to be remade none the less. Surely, I’m not alone in that idea?
