The Doctor couldn’t save this awful thing..
Dr. Giggles (1992)
Directed By: Manny Coto (Zenon: The Zequel)
The Prologue
In the weird and wacky world of horror movies you have a lot of strange things that over time gather a cult following. Many of those films are films that I myself like and can see where the following came from. With Dr.Giggles, I have nooo idea where this following came from because I’ll be honest, I HATE this movie.
But regardless, I watched this movie for The Horrorphilia podcast and while if you’ve heard that you’ve heard all I have to say about this thing, I figured why not toss it in a more “well said” word form?
The Movie
The psychopathic son of a mass-murdering doctor, escapes from his mental institution to seek revenge on the town where his father was caught…Or as I like to say about it, the blueprint for everything that was wrong with horror in the 90′s before Scream showed up and made things a lot better, for at least a little while.
From the moment that Doctor Evan Rendell very easily escapes the wacko house you get the vibe right out of the gate that what you are about to see is going to be an over the top cartoon-like horror film that while it had a chance of being special ends up as more of a joke with MOST the gore and kills happening off screen..or at least the bloody ones.
As Evan returns home and then proceeds to off people in town you notice he seems to have that same Jason power where he’s able to show up just anywhere around town at anytime. While that can be looked over you also have to deal with the fact he has a doctor bag that seems to be bottomless with all he pulls out of it as well as we are supposed to look over the fact he knows all this new technology to spite being locked away all this time?
If you look for good acting to latch on to all you’ll have is Dr. Giggles himself, Larry Drake. Larry makes the best of a awful situation making the film only slightly watchable. The rest suck to the high Heavens giving you not one person to get behind or want to see live. Seeing a few even trying to get over a song about Evan that looks like a cheap knock off of the 1,2, Freddy song makes your urge to want to punch through your TV and hit these folks even stronger.
So besides the performance of Drake himself, there are a couple okay kills (that lack blood) that are alright while watching the movie. The over use of one-liners from Dr.Giggles is also a thing that was used way too much and can really rip away on a person’s nerves while watching. All this being said, while a lot of folks seem to like this movie, I’d say skip it!
The Conclusion
Why do you people love this movie sooo much?? I am lost for finding a logical reason. Is it the over the top one-liners?? Is it the performance of Larry Drake?? Because I just don’t get it at all.
Typical 90′s horror films..skip skip skip!
