Now to be fair I should probably be writing and posting my review for Birdemic or Ultimate Deathmatch 2 BUT I figure those painful to watch films can wait another day. And why is that you ask? Because today is THE day of WrestleMania 27!! The one night of the year that regardless of how popular WWE is at the time EVERYONE can talk about some wrestling without shame. It’s the Superbowl of the business and if you don’t dig this I am very sorry but I am going to take the time to run down the card and top it off with my prediction of just who I think will win each match.
The Return of THE ROCK
Keep in mind here that after a long seven years The Rock has returned to WWE to “host” WrestleMania 27! And while this promises to be filled with tons of Rock backstage skits, the real fireworks with Rock will come during one of the show’s matches. We will have more on this later…
WWE U.S. Title Match
Daniel Bryan vs. Champion: Sheamus
Early rumors has this match being bumped to the pre-show, but let’s hope not and stay positive. Daniel Bryan (aka Bryan Danielson) had a rocky road coming into WWE, but finally he beat The Miz for the U.S. Title. He then proceeded to keep the title for around six months until Sheamus, who was in a very horrible slump to spite being the King of the ring, ended that reign a few weeks back. Bryan invoked his rematch clause and here we are. Rest a sure these two could steal the show IF given the time. Sadly that time probably won’t be given, but it should be fun while it lasts. I wish Bryan would win but Sheamus is on the way back up the ranks so I see no need to cut his new title reign short.
WINNER: Sheamus
Grudge Match
Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes
Long story short, Rey has a history of knee problems and as a result he wears a knee brace. During a match with Cody, who thinks of himself as “Dashing”, that knee brace connected with Cody’s face injuring Cody. The real depth to this feud came after. Since this went down Rhodes has been acting as if his face has been horribly disfigured when in reality it’s just fine and all in his head. Cody has been channeling Dr.Doom in his promos since and vows to hurt Rey and take his mask at ‘Mania! Now I’m all for Cody winning, but Rey tends to be the underdog that always wins unless he’s the world champion. This is one of the two matches I’m not 100% on, but I’ll give the benifit to Cody here and I assume this won’t end things just yet anyway.
WINNER: Cody Rhodes
Grudge Match
The Corre: Intercontinental Champion: Wade Barrett, Ezekiel Jackson, WWE Tag Team Champions: Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater vs. The Big Show, Kane, Santino Marella, and Vladimir Kozlov???
Ever since Barrett was booted from The Nexus to form a new group called The Corre with Jackson and former Nexus members Gabriel and Slater they have been a thorn in the side of everyone involved on the other side in this match. Now at the first day of the WrestleMania Access event, The Corre jumped the big Russian, Kozlov, and may have just eliminated him from the match. Depending on who wins may just depend on who will take his place should that be the case. Still, The Corre NEEDS to go over here to remain looking legit.
WINNERS: The Corre
Mixed Tag Team Action
John Morrison, Trish Stratus, and Snooki vs. Dolph Ziggler, and Laycool (w/Vickie Guerrero)
Well I can’t say I’m looking forward to seeing a member of Jersey Shore on the biggest wrestling event of the year but here we have it. Basically Laycool pissed off Trish and Snooki on an episode of Monday Night RAW, and since Trish already had beef with them going back to the February pay-per-view, Elimination Chamber, each pair of ladies found a male partner and here we are. I hope this is kept short and I’m sure there’s no way you bring in Snooki for a big payday and have her lose. Sooo..
WINNERS: Morrison, Trish, and Snooki
Grudge Match
Randy Orton vs. CM Punk
Two years ago CM Punk was the Straight Edge good guy and Orton was the evil bad guy. Punk was World Champion and it was a punt to the head from the evil Orton that caused Punk to lose his title. Fast forward to 2011 and Punk is the evil Straight Edge leader of the NEW Nexus and Orton, to spite not changing at all, is the fan favorite. Punk seems to be on his own here as his quest to finally make Randy pay after two years has lead Orton to punting each member of the New Nexus and taking them out of the situation heading into ‘Mania. Now of course with all hope seemingly lost for the evil Punk, you just have to assume he’s got an ace up his sleeve. I’m counting on that actually.
WINNER: CM Punk
Special Referee “Stone Cold” Steve Austin
Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Michael Cole (w/Jack Swagger)
So you may wonder why 2/3rds of the RAW Announce team are facing off at Mania right? Well to put it simple, back at the end of 2010 Michael Cole had become the #1 cheerleader to WWE Champion The Miz and had took that to an annoying level. The King had issues with Miz and was actually just about to beat Miz for the WWE Title until Cole ran in and go in the way. Now here we are months later with Lawler reaching his peek of tolerance for Cole and calling him out only for Cole to try to stack the deck against The King by adding Jack Swagger to his corner as his trainer. Insert “Stone Cold” Steve Austin to ref the match and keep it straight. Lets not kid ourselves, we’ve waited most of a year to see Cole get his, there’s just no way that doesn’t happen.
WINNER: Jerry “The King” Lawler
World Title Match
Champion: Edge (w/Christian) vs. Alberto Del Rio (w/ Brodus Clay)
Edge is the champ and Del Rio won the first ever 40 man Royal Rumble to earn his shot. Now of course Del Rio had already hurt Edge’s former part and best friend , Christian, and was trying to hurt Edge when Christian made his return for the save. Now leading into the match Edge has Christian in his corner to even the odds since Del Rio has got the former NXT rookie, Brodus Clay in his. Del Rio says it’s his destiny to be champion, and I think he’s going to be a pretty big deal rather quick, so I look for a miscommunication or an all out backstabbing to go down between Edge and Christian leading to a new champ!
WINNER: Alberto Del Rio
WWE Title Match
Champion: The Miz (w/Alex Riley) vs. John Cena
Miz and Cena have never gotten along and the tension between the two has built and built going really far back. But the wild card into this whole issue is The Rock. The match was set between Miz and Cena when after seven years The Rock came back. Immediately The Rock got into a war of words with Cena, leading to The Miz, who IS the WWE Champion being an after thought. After weeks of tension between everyone on RAW, Cena and Rock’s war of words came face to face last Monday and looked to just about be ready to turn ugly when Miz along with Riley attacked The Rock. Rock fought both off but turned around to catch an AA from Cena! The Rock is PISSED and looking for revenge but the match is still between Miz and Cena. Cena may learn that you just don’t mess with The Rock at WrestleMania 27, and the crowd won’t mind at all if Rock lays the Smackdown on Cena, Miz or both! This was the other match I was 50/50 on, but I think Rock pays Cena back and it leads to Miz keeping the title.
WINNER: The Miz
Will The Streak Survive??
The Undertaker vs. Triple H
The Undertaker has NEVER lost at WrestleMania. As a matter of fact he’s beat a who’s who of wrestling legends to rack up an 18 and 0 record. Now of course he beat Triple H once before at WrestleMania 17 but we aren’t supposed to remember that. After beating Triple H’s best friend Shawn Michaels two ‘Manias in a row, with the last one retiring Shawn for good, the tension has never been higher between “The Dead Man” and “The Game”. Shawn has even been added back into the tension as he has a legit reason to run-in and give either Sweet Chin Music before the match is over! While most would assume it’s a sure thing that Taker gets the win here to build up the possibility of fighting to go 20 and 0 next year, just enough doubt and questions have came up to make this thing interesting. And since things aren’t so clear, just like last year, I have to go with my gut feeling on this one.
WINNER: The Undertaker
