Porkchop 2: Rise of the Rind (2011)
Director: Eamon Hardiman
Where to get it: Alternative Cinema
When young Simon Robertson (Sam Qualiana) moves with his family to a new town, he thinks the biggest peril will be the local bullies. Unfortunately, Simon’s friend Meg (Angela Pritchett) informs him that this town has a much darker secret: a body count stretching into the hundreds – all the handiwork of Porkchop, a deranged madman with a pig mask. When the killer resurfaces, Simon and Meg will experience the most terrifying night of their soon-to-be short lives.
Porkchop 2 (aka Porkchops) is the follow up the slasher Porkchop that I liked way more than I probably should have. The original film was fun and the sequels follow up in those same footsteps. That also means that Porkchop 2 does have the same 80s feel and vibe that fans of old school slashers will love. There is also still a goofy nature to everything and nothing is ever taken too seriously. If you can deal with films like that then you will also like this. Of course the film does throw some shocks and surprises at us that walk the thin line of being clever and being a bit much. Without giving anything away, something major does take place around the 43 minute mark that I am a bit torn on. We also have our two leads singing their words early on and that was just bad in my book. I like different but the singing came off a bit awkward.
But we do have nudity, blood, and a few legit laughs out loud moments that make for an enjoyable 71 minutes of film. There are soo many different films that are always coming out and there are a few slasher films in the mix. Porkchop is good enough to stand out from the pack of indie films out there. Some people might have issues with some of the unanswered questions the movie leaves open, but I can only assume we will find that out in the coming third film in the series, Porkchop 3D. When Hatchet was coming out it used the tag line about being “old school American horror”. I think Porkchop is legit old school American horror. It’s a product of someone who digs horror and isn’t just pandering. That shows through with Porkchop 2 and it makes the film all the more entertaining.
