Lt. Cobretti (Sylvester Stallone) is a one-man assault team whose laser-mount submachine gun and pearl-handled Colt .45 spit pure crime-stopping venom! Director George P. Cosmatos (Rambo: First Blood Part II, Tombstone) teams up again with Stallone for this thriller pitting Cobretti against a merciless serial killer. The trail leads to not one murderer but also an army of psychos bent on slashing their way to a “New Order” – and killing a witness (Brigitte Nielsen) along the way. Fortunately, her protector is Cobra, a man who delivers vigilante justice like no other!
Cobra is an insane movie and I mean that in the best way possible. It mixes horror elements with the over the top action elements that star Sylvester Stallone is known for into one big bag of 80’s cheese. And if you love 80’s movies as I do that means you have to see this one to believe it. We are in the city where a cult of people are killing at will and the cops can’t figure it out. After someone witnesses this and needs someone to protect them they call in the Cobra (Stallone himself). That’s where he channels Rambo and becomes a one-man army against this cult and their crazy leader. It all about as unrealistic as you can imagine but I love the movie and I’m sure anyone else who loves this type of stuff will as well.
My only real beef with this release is that we don’t have the bloodier cut of the film that I hear is out there in very bad quality. That cut of the film is about in the same class as the old Halloween producers cut and when I heard this was coming out I had hoped we would get that at long last in HD. You sadly don’t get that but you do get the movie on a new transfer that looks better than the old Warner release. The Scream Factory Blu-ray didn’t have that cut, the new Arrow 4K doesn’t have that cut, so you better believe this re-issue from Warner won’t either. Still, Cobra is a movie that is a bit unique in the way it mixes things together and it is extremely entertaining from start to finish.
