Watching They Will Kill You feels a bit like someone took Kill Bill, filtered it through a stylish indie blender, sprinkled in a dash of live-action anime energy, and then proudly served it up without pretending it was anything else.

The best comparison I can make is this: it’s like a sugar-free Kill Bill.

No, that’s not an insult.

It’s still got plenty of flavor—you just don’t get quite the same over-the-top, candy-coated excess. Instead, the movie carves out its own identity with slick action, memorable visuals, and a style that often feels like an anime decided it was tired of being animated and wanted to punch people in live action for a while.

The action scenes are easily the biggest selling point. They’re energetic, creative, and staged with enough flair to keep things exciting. Every fight has personality, and thankfully the filmmakers understand that if you’re making an action movie, the audience actually wants to… you know… watch action. Revolutionary concept, Hollywood.

Visually, the film is a treat. It embraces bold compositions, striking lighting, and a heightened reality that gives everything an almost graphic-novel feel. It’s stylish without constantly yelling, “LOOK HOW STYLISH I AM!”—a balance that’s harder to pull off than it looks.

The cast clearly understands the assignment, committing fully to the film’s heightened world. Nobody seems embarrassed by the premise or the tone, which goes a long way toward making everything work. Confidence can carry a movie a surprisingly long distance.

Sure, not every character gets a ton of development, and there are moments where style edges out substance. But honestly, that’s part of the appeal. This isn’t trying to be a three-hour meditation on the human condition. It’s trying to entertain you, and it succeeds far more often than it misses.

The movie also has that wonderfully exaggerated, larger-than-life quality that made me think of a live-action anime. Characters are cool because the movie believes they’re cool, the action is bigger than life, and the whole experience has an infectious “just go with it” attitude.

By the time the credits rolled, I wasn’t worrying about whether it reinvented the genre—I was thinking about how much fun I’d had.

They Will Kill You may remind you of Kill Bill, but it never feels like a cheap imitation. It’s more like a leaner, scrappier cousin that grew up on the same cinematic diet. A sugar-free Kill Bill, if you will—still satisfying, still stylish, and still capable of delivering a serious kick. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want from an action movie.
