Accident (2009)
Director: Pou-Soi Cheang
Where to get it: Shout factory
A troubled assassin, who works by orchestrating “accidents”, suspects that an accident that happens to his team is not an accident at all. We that in mind we dive deep into a story of well crafted murders and paranoia. Is this assassin just losing his mind? Or is he on to more than he might think? If nothing else, this movie does a find job of keeping you guessing.
Accident, does set a well crafted table for the viewer to try to comprehend. It makes you question things more than once and that is a very good thing, it’s a very good way to tell a story. In this well acted thriller, you can never be sure just how things are going and if they are as they appear to be. It might be a slower moving film, but it’s a film that if nothing else is really flourishing in it’s cinematography and appearance. There might not be wall to wall action or gore, but the film for the most part doesn’t seem to need it that much. But I would have liked things to have moved along a little quicker and a little more gore to go with the violence would have helped.
I think one of the more clever parts of this film is the clever ways that people come up with to kill off other people. It’s like that old mouse trap game in the way things have to happen in order for the traps that are set for people to work. So if nothing else, I feel seeing that part of the film is really cool and something you don’t see everyday. It’s clear that a very smart person put all that together and it should be acknowledged and praised for what it is. I’m not sure how well it matches up with other Asian films, such as Oldboy and I Saw the Devil, but it does make for an OK watch if you are really into foreign films.
