In the late 1800′s, a beautiful former prostitute (January Jones) is trying to build an honest life with her husband in the rugged plains of New Mexico. When she catches the eye of a sadistic and powerful religious leader (Jason Isaacs), her life is violently turned upside down. She embarks on a bloody course of vengeance with the assistance of a renegade sheriff (Ed Harris) who has violent tendencies of his own.
Sweetwater is a pretty cool little western flick that is made much better by the caliber of acting that is also has. It does move slow in spots, but it is also a rather violent film in spots as well. I’m not the biggest fan of Western films, but when you add in a good deal of violence I can become much more accepting to them and that does seem to be the case here. What the film lacks in other areas, it at least makes up for the most of it with a good effort and a nice plot that should keep you from ejecting the disc before the film ends. I’m not saying it is the best film I’ve ever seen or anything, but it is very watchable for what it is.
Nobody enjoys a good story about a prostitute as much as I do, but I think regardless of how good of a job January Jones does here, I believe Ed Harris might be the best actor we have and I think most everyone who sees this film will agree. The Miller brother pull together to make a rather nice film that might not top any lists, but it is certainly well worth a good once over in the watch department, especially if you like stories about the west in the 1800s. It is very hard to find watchable films based on that stuff today.
