GRACE: THE POSSESSION, a story told like never before through the eyes of the possessed. Alexia Fast (Jack Reacher) is Grace: a naive, beautiful, virginal college freshman trying to deal with campus culture and her outgoing new roommate. But when a terror takes over her body and unleashes chaos, Grace returns to the cold clutches of her severe grandmother (Lin Shaye) and the strict rules of the church. Haunted by the horrific death of her mother and deeply ingrained, destructive urges, she must stop the demon inside before it’s too late.
Originally just titled Grace, but then changed to Grace: The Possession, which in return confused most about if this was a sequel to Grace or The Possession, which it isn’t to either. This film offers some new stuff to us. Or it at least offers more than just enough to cause me make a giant sentence to start this review. What you get here is the story of a girl possessed by some thing and we see the entire thing unfold through her eyes. I can’t recall anything outside of the remake of Maniac where we’ve seen this used in horror (nor counting Enter the Void as a horror film). It is an effective way to tell a story and it does add a little more to the table here making it feel like more than just another in the very long line of recent possession movies. I’m not saying it is an outstanding horror film or that it is top 10 material,
Anything the film might lack it at least makes up for it with the creative side of things. These are about the only found footage style movies I can stomach anymore unless the film is just awesome. Here, with this style, the movie can get away with just being good and it still seems better due to the way the story is told. Overall, the film offers enough thrills and chills to place it on your watch list for the year. Might be a good change of pace for you this Halloween season as well. It isn’t the best possession film I’ve seen, but it might be the one with the most unique take and certainly is offering up new stuff with a very strong lead to drive it home. Be sure to at least give it a shot if you get the chance to see it!
