In DEADSIGHT, Mara Madigan is a pregnant police officer about to go on maternity leave. But on her last day on the job, she wakes up to a world ravaged by a nightmarish and bloody plague of the living dead. Amidst the chaos and violence, she finds Ben Neilson, a man who is virtually blind, helpless, and has a mystery shrouding his past. Somehow these two must put their heads together and find a way to safety to escape this living hell.
I’ll give Deadsight props right out of the gate for giving us a bit of a new take on the whole zombie/infected story. Using a mix of fast and slow zombies, Deadsight follows a blind man who gets caught out in this new epidemic all alone all the whole following a pregnant cop until the two finally meet up. The movie has a bit of character development along the way, it leaves some stuff a bit up in the air, but it also has a whole heck of a lot of heads exploding and blood so I’m a little easier on looking away from some things about it. It kind of felt like a more American style 28 Days later in some spots and that’s always a good thing. It is a movie with a lower budget and I feel it used what it had well enough to deliver a solid zombie flick and one of the better ones we’ve seen in a long time, not that the competition has really been that strong, but I don’t want to take anything away from what we get here. I just don’t want you to go into it expecting too much either.
This movie deals with a few things that aren’t always front a center. It has some of that old school Romero style social commentary and might even be making a case for flu shots among other things. Regardless of the intention here, I like to just take it as a zombie flick and in that regard this is a solid movie that I think will be finding a nice crowd out there among the horror faithful. I know zombie movies and the whole zombie concept is one that had been played out a bit too much over the last few years, but Deadsight is a nice step back in the right direction. I wanted to see how everything was going to playout and I don’t think I’d be upset if they ever followed it up with another one either. I was impressed just a bit with this one.
