I really wanted to like Gingerclown a bit more than I did. I think at the end of the day you end up with a whole heck of a lot of sizzle, but when you cut down into it you don’t find a whole lot of steak. Now let me try to explain why. This film looks great. I don’t mean in an HD sort of way (this was SD DVD after-all), but the film just looks cool. It mixes a nice set with some CGI environment and it feels like an 80s film at heart, which is good since it is set in 1983. There is also some really cool looking creatures in this movie as well and many are voiced by some really well known people. I think the movie had some really cool things going for it and it could have been a lot better than things end up, the movie just sort of hangs around and because there isn’t much going on with the plot.
When you really examine things you have a movie where people are walking around this theme park and some have some very bad luck, but it really just boils down to a lot of walking and a lot of scenes of these monsters watching these people walking. Had there been more action in between all of this we’d be talking about a great movie, but we don’t get a ton of scenes filled with anything of any importance going on. It has the look, it has the cast, and it had the budget. It just doesn’t really find anything cool to do with it unfortunately. Toss in some really bad moments of dialogue and we end up with a really cool looking film that is fun, but loses the luster pretty quick when you realize nothing major is going to happen anytime soon. Maybe if they ever have another one they’ll learn from this one and deliver us the complete package.
