From acclaimed horror director Peter Strickland (The Duke of Burgundy) comes this truly nightmarish story of a lonely woman (Oscar® nominee Marianne Jean-Baptiste) recently separated from her husband, who visits a bewitching London department store for a dress that will transform her life. She is fitted with a flattering, blood-red gown — which, in time, will unleash a malevolent curse and unstoppable evil, threatening everyone in its path.
In Fabric is a different take on a ghost story that happens with the backdrop of a busy winter sales period in a department store and follows the life of a cursed dress as it passes from person to person, with devastating consequences. Now, this is an A24 film which means it comes with lots of fanfare, but I don’t know if I’d call this one a movie of my own personal taste. I enjoyed the concept because it is a different concept, you can’t deny that. I also think the acting was fine and dandy here as well. But it’s when you get down to how fast things were getting down on the screen where I tend to have my issue with it. I think things were just a bit too slow and getting to the good portions of the film was a bit of a chore. The movie was packing the right tools, but I think the execution of these tools was a bit wrong. If things had just keep coming at a fast pace I’d have liked it a lot more.
I am a fan of thinking outside the box and this movie at least does that if it doesn’t do anything else. There’s always a place for that on my movie shelf but I would like to have a slightly better script on the ones I do add to the self. If you like movies that are weird and just a bit artsy, then you will probably have all you want and more with a movie like In Fabric. If you are wanting a more “coming at you” style movie that gets where it is going and does so in a nice time, then you might want to go look at other places for your horror and thriller satisfaction. But, it is a good concept. Can’t deny that at least.
