Two filmmakers, Neil and Andrew, set out to make a documentary about a rash of domestic animal slaughters in rural Western New York. After interviewing several local residents, the filmmakers learn the Native American legend of Yá·yahk osnúhsa? – “Six Fingers” in English, a bipedal creature not unlike Bigfoot, so named because it has three fingers on each hand. Believing that Six Fingers is responsible for the animal slayings, the filmmakers set out on a terrifying journey into the woods to discover whether or not the creature exists.
While I love that the people behind this movie went and done what they did, I’m afraid this movie does have some issues to it that are hard to ignore. They went the found footage route with it, so unless you want to give everyone the money shot up front and nowhere else to go with it from there, you have to pad things out. So pad it out they did, as they used the classic Blair Witch method of having interviews and watching them go through the process of seeking out the legend. There is a few bright moments here and there with it, but I’d be lieing if I also didn’t point out that it does get dull from time to time as we wait. That makes most of the first half of the film hard at times to deal with.
Now I admit that anytime we get “Six Fingers” on the screen is a good time. I just wish we had more people on the screen with him for more of a body count. Even with the lower budget restrictions I think these guys turn in one of the better Big Foot inspired costumes you will find and we should applaud that. I think people who dig indie films will be able to appreciate this for what it is, but it might be lost on the more wider horror audience. It has some spotty acting and dull moments, but it does pack some heart. We can’t look over that even if we have issues some of the other stuff going on.
