The Maniac Cop series’ first sequel pits Matt Cordell (Robert Z’dar), the crazed, murderous “Maniac Cop” of the first film (now horribly disfigured after a particularly brutal stay in prison), and Turkel (Leo Rossi), a serial killer who likes to murder strippers, against a frenzied NYPD detective, Sean McKinney (Robert Davi), who is just one step ahead of a nervous breakdown. Maniac Cop 2 features a new 1080p 1.85:1 video presentation mastered in 4K from the original camera negative and supervised by Director of Photography James Lemmo, a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround track, and a variety of extras
Where the original Maniac Cop seemed to be just another slasher movie, be it a well-done slasher movie, Maniac Cop 2, adds in a lot more action to the mix. Setting the table with some new leads and some familiar ones for at least a little while, we are tossed into a world where things are much different from before, and new and interesting elements are tossed into the mix. Robert Davi is here this time around and he is the perfect character and actor for this type of environment. I don’t know if I’d take him over Bruce Campbell if I had the choice, but he does a fine job and does seem to fit.
In the middle of the gore effects and the explosions, we also have a grand transfer that will please everyone who might be interested in upgrading to 4K, as this thing looks AMAZING. Then again, what Blue Underground 4K release doesn’t look great these days? They just keep knocking this format out of the park. You have near-perfect details and color. While the transfer might be the best thing about the set overall. The movie isn’t bad either. I liked the original, but I like this one just a little better due to the insertion of a “maniac” type character and all the action scenes. The first two Maniac Cop films are very underrated and I believe now with this release all of you will see why.
