The Blu-ray release of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is the kind of package that makes you go, “Wow, physical media isn’t dead—it just leveled up while nobody was looking.”

Based on the world of Bryan Lee O’Malley (and yes, spiritually tied to the chaotic charm of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), this limited series somehow manages to both honor the original story and gleefully smash it with a pixelated hammer. If you thought you knew where this was going—congrats, you don’t. The show zigzags so hard it might as well come with a warning label.

Now, let’s talk Blu-ray. Because this is where things get dangerously close to “shut up and take my money” territory.

Visually, the transfer is clean. Like, distractingly clean. The neon-soaked, anime-styled chaos absolutely pops in HD, making every fight, transition, and over-the-top visual gag look like it was designed specifically to show off your TV. Colors hit hard, motion is smooth, and there’s so much going on in each frame you almost feel obligated to rewind just to catch everything you missed.

Audio? Also stacked. Whether it’s the soundtrack flexing like it knows it’s cooler than you, or the voice cast (including returning favorites) clearly having the time of their lives, it all comes through crisp and energetic. This is the kind of release where your speakers get a workout whether they signed up for it or not.

Extras are where things get interesting. Depending on the edition, you’re likely getting behind-the-scenes content, interviews, and maybe a few “look how much fun we had making this” featurettes. Nothing wildly groundbreaking—but enough to make it feel like more than just a barebones cash grab.

Now, is it perfect? Of course not. If you were expecting a straight adaptation, this series already threw that expectation out the window—and the Blu-ray isn’t here to apologize for it. And if you’re not already on board with Scott Pilgrim’s brand of hyperactive, reference-heavy storytelling, no amount of high-definition polish is going to convert you.

But if you are a fan? This release is basically a victory lap.

The Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Blu-ray is loud, stylish, a little chaotic, and fully aware of how cool it is—just like the series itself. It’s the kind of physical release that reminds you why owning something still feels better than just scrolling past it.
