The abandoned home of Wilfred Butler, a wealthy but troubled man who committed suicide in 1987, has been willed to his grandson, Jeffrey. The house has sat in disarray since Wilfred’s death, standing in the way of developers who want to turn the property into residential homes. Just before Christmas 2012, many years after Wilfred’s death, Jeffrey and his lawyer appear in town to negotiate the sale of the property. But an Axe wielding maniac has set up residence in the house, and he doesn’t take kindly to strangers.
Well, what I assumed was a unofficial sequel to the public domain film Silent Night, Deadly Night is actually a remake. I guess in some ways you could say that it pretty much captures the way of the original because like the film it is remaking it is pretty dull. As the movie went along I noticed the best part of it was spotting the references to the director’s other dull film Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection. Yes, the man has pretty much made two films based off other films that are public domain. That alone should tell you what type of creativity we are working with.
The film at least has some blood to it, a feat that even the original could say based on the classic axe scene that this movie duplicates. However, this one does try to find ways to toss in some other blood filled moments they just don’t do much to make things any better or anymore watchable as things roll along with it. Even if you like slashers as much as I do I just don’t think you will be able to find a whole lot to invest in here. Silent Night, Bloody night was an old school film that actually was a rare case in that it could have used a remake. The sad thing is, the remake it got isn’t much better if better at all.
